The best known honey bee is the western honey bee, (Apis mellifera), which was domesticated for honey production and crop pollination. The only other domesticated bee is the eastern honey bee (Apis cerana), which occurs in South, Southeast, and East Asia.
There are many types of honey bees in the world but the primary ones used by humans to gather honey are the eastern honey bee and the western honey bee. The western honey bee is the bee used for honey in the new world Europe Africa in the Middle East where the eastern honey bee is used in the Far East. The western honey bee was brought to the Americas by European settlers.
